Neither of my siblings were interested in the pictures left in the house so I took them all. I also took my parents scrapbooks. They are wonderful, but they are on non-acid free paper. I want to redo them, but I don't know how to safely remove the pictures from the paper. Does anyone know of a product that can help with this? __________________ "The most valuable thing you can make is a mistake--you can't learn anything from being perfect." -Adam Osborne- |

FYI - Every time a page or photo was touched, it was no longer acid-free. Fingers eliminate acid-free element. __________________ |

I suggest Un-Du. However, if a liquid glue or rubber cement was used, it won't work. You could buy a can of Make It Acid-Free and spray the back of the paper. That would at least make the paper they are glued on acid-free. Then it might be possible to remove the entire page and carefully cut out the photos. |

You may also consider scanning them on your computer. My family has been doing this a lot to make space. I have not yet, but expect to do it with vacation shots if I can decide what to do with the ephemera. Maybe you just cut around them on the base paper if you cant get it off-and use that acid-spray scrapjanny suggested. I remember when we all converted from the black corners to the sticky albums with the plastic over page. Which turned not just yellow but light brown...at least most of my pics fell off again TG. __________________ |

Quote: Please tell us more. What kind of material are the pages? How are the photos adhered? Do you know how old the scrapbooks are? I have some from the 1940's !! The paper is a rough, grey paper. They are from the 1950's. __________________ "The most valuable thing you can make is a mistake--you can't learn anything from being perfect." -Adam Osborne- |

Unfortunately, the photos are on both sides of the paper so I can't spray the back. I think liquid glue was used to attach them. __________________ "The most valuable thing you can make is a mistake--you can't learn anything from being perfect." -Adam Osborne- |

My mom used photo corners in her old photo album. Thank goodness! I was able to remove them, scan them, and pop them right back in place. Now, look at us. We are all wanting to work with the strongest glue, the best adhesive, etc. Our grandchildren will one day be cursing us! LOL You might try a length of dental floss -- very, very carefully "saw" through from the edges to the middle, being careful not to bend or tear anything. That's what I used to get my old photos off those so-called "magnetic" pages that held the pictures in place with lines of sticky stuff. Edited to add . . . if worse comes to worst, you might leave bits of the acidic paper that does not want to come off. Better a little acidic age damage than tearing up a the photo(s). __________________ |

Quote: The other approach would be to leave the originals as they are and take pictures of the photos to re-print them or digitally scrap them. I have not done this myself but participate in a digital scrapbooking group where plenty of other people do this and are happy with the results. There is special equipment you can buy, but some people get good results by using a phone and good natural light. I will look into this. Thanks. __________________ "The most valuable thing you can make is a mistake--you can't learn anything from being perfect." -Adam Osborne- |
